IOM-Bangladesh with financial assistance of the Canadian government has established a solar powered document analysis centre with advanced investigation software at the Benapole land port, aiming to control human trafficking.
Powered by solar panel from Rahimafrooz, the analysis centre would help the Benapole land port improve the efficiency and speed of the immigration check post, keeping constant coordination with the central office in Dhaka, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) office said.
"About 10,000 people move through Dhaka airport daily and 2,000 others through Benapole land border check post," Additional Inspector General of the Special Branch Mohammad Javed Patwary Tuesday said.
With the modernised immigration system at Benapole, the Special Branch of Police will be able to regularly monitor immigration procedures online from Dhaka," he said while inaugurating the country's first solar powered border check point at Benapole.
In the last two years, IOM also supported the Special Branch to set up another Document Analysis Centre at Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport, Dhaka and train immigration officials on immigration investigation techniques used at international level. IOM also assisted in interconnecting five of the thirty three border check posts in Bangladesh. These previous work were done with the support of the government of Australia.
The Document Analysis Centers are capable of verifying travel documents of incoming and outgoing passengers with highly sophisticated equipments and computer software.
"IOM Dhaka has been privileged to have established a strong partnership with the Special Branch since 2004. It is indeed encouraging to see that the programmes to enhance migration management capacity in Bangladesh are in the process of having positive results," said IOM Regional Representative in Dhaka Rabab Fatima.
Other guests and dignitaries present at the opening ceremony were First Secretary (Political) of Canadian High Commission Marcel Cloutier as special guest, Additional DIG, Khulna Range of Bangladesh Police Siddiqur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner, Jessore Mohibul Haque and SP, Jessore Md. Didar Ahmed.
The guests thanked IOM and the Canadian government for supporting the process to enhance capacity of the immigration activities.
"This is one step forward towards the creation of 'digital Bangladesh'. We will be able to process immigration formalities much faster at Benapole with the new facilities," Deputy Commissioner of Jessore Mohibul Haque said in his address.
