REZAUL KARIM | Saturday, 23 April 2022

An Iranian company eagerly seeks to purchase six roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) ships and hire a cruiser from Bangladesh.
TT Tejarar Gostaresh Kish, a member of Kish Merchant Association, has recently shown its purchasing interest to Bangladesh mission in Iran.
The Bangladesh embassy has requested the authorities concerned to take prompt steps in this connection.
It draws attention of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, foreign ministry, commerce ministry Bangladesh Ship Builders Association, Association of Export-oriented Shipbuilding Industries of Bangladesh, and Western Marine Shipyard Ltd. Currently, Bangladesh has more than 200 shipbuilding companies, mostly concentrated in Dhaka, Chittagong, Narayanganj, Barisal and Khulna.
According to the mission's letter, the Iranian company is keen to buy six ro-ro ships and hire a cruise ship from Bangladesh. The firm intends to hire from any Bangladesh supplier a cruiser with a capacity of 300-500 passengers for use duration with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Shipbuilding is a growing industry in Bangladesh with great potential. It has a long history of shipbuilding dating back to the early modern era.
However, shipbuilding has turned out to be a promising sunrise industry in recent years with fetching orders from abroad for the locally made ships.
