Allegation of irregularities in the appointment process of three lecturers at the Department of Persian of Dhaka University has been raised against the department chairman KM Saiful Islam Khan.
A group of teachers, led by Saiful Islam, is currently carrying out tough lobbying to appoint pass-course degree holder of National University Mohammad Isa Shahedi and Md Bahauddin allegedly involved in question leakage of the department's admission test, as lecturers excluding the qualified candidates.
Sources said the aforesaid two applicants have been considered in the list of eligible candidates of the department coordination and development (C and D) committee despite the fact that they could not meet the criteria set for the appointment as a lecturer at the university. This is because they are beloved of the department chairman.
Due to prevailing four-year honours course at DU and other universities now, Isa Shahedi is not competent for the post of lecturer at the university as he had passed the three-year Bachelor of Arts (BA pass course) in 1993 and the first and second terms of Masters of Arts (MA) respectively in 1996 and 1997 from National University
On the other hand, Md Bahauddin was involved in leakage of question papers of the department's admission test in 2003 in the name of assisting his teachers.
Bahauddin also allegedly violated a female admission seeker at the university in the name of helping her in admission process the same year and reports in this respect were published in different national dailies July 3 in 2003.
When contacted, chairman Saiful Islam said there were now many teachers at the university who were three-year BA degree holders, putting a query that what's the problem in appointing the BA pass degree holders if they have other qualifications?
Selection committee head and DU Pro-VC AFM Yusuf Haider told the FE that no such allegation has come to him till now, adding that lobbying would be of no avail if the candidates cannot go through the criteria of quality.
