IS claims responsibility for attacks in Sri Lanka

Thursday, 25 April 2019

The terrible carnage in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday has claimed 359 lives till date. The number of wounded is around 500. There was a series of eight explosions targeted at churches, hotels and other places. Even after these explosions, the police and law enforcement agency officials of the country defused some bombs. There was a scare about a lorry carrying explosives on Tuesday night.
Already the Islamic State or Daesh has claimed responsibility for the attacks. It is mindboggling that the suicide bombers went to such lengths to claim the lives of so many innocents. There were many children, women and old people who have lost their lives. There should be no sympathy whatsoever for these maniacs who targeted people on one of the holiest days for the Christian community. These terrorists should not be identified by their faith, caste, family members or anything else. They are enemies of humanity and must be punished for their crimes as soon as possible.
What is intriguing is that the Sri Lankan government failed to act on an intelligence warning about terrorist attacks that was given 10 days before the mayhem. No actions were taken as it did not reach the right quarters in time. I hope that a thorough investigation would be conducted into this. Also, all the people involved with the attacks should be traced, arrested and punished.
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the victims and those who have been seriously wounded in the attacks.
