Islami Muktijoddha Parishad President Shahidul Islam Kabir urged the government to set price of edible oil at Tk 150 per liter by keeping consistency with the international market once needed to subsidize.
He made the demand while addressing a session arranged by the organization in the capital on Friday, reports UNB.
Shahidul said sufferings of the people increased following a hike by Tk 12 per liter despite its price decreasing in the international market for the past 10 consecutive months.
"People will face a severe economic crisis caused by the price hike of the edible oil amid the constant hiking of essentials," he said.
Though the government hiked the price of the edible oil, no measures have been taken to increase income of general people similarly, the organization's president said.
He also said that the government must back down from the decision to hike essentials' prices including oil.
Urging the authorities concerned to withdraw the anti-people decisions, Shahidul alleged that the government has been pressing the burden of Valued Added Tax (VAT) on people instead of bringing back money laundered abroad and stopping corruption.
The organization's leaders Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Yasin Arafat, among others, spoke at the event.
