Islamist group calls hartal for Dec 26

Thursday, 9 December 2010

Pro-BNP Islamist group Sammilito Ulama-Mashayekh Parishad has called a countrywide dawn-to-dask general strike on December 26 protesting the national education policy draft, which aims to 'secularise' the education system, reports bdnews24.com.
The protest programme was declared by the group's chief Muhiuddin Khan from a press conference Wednesday.
Group member and Islami Oikyo Jote's (IOJ) general secretary Abdul Latif Nezami said: "The government move is in no way acceptable. So we have called the hartal all over the country on December 26."
On Monday, the group announced a series of rallies and processions across the country until December 25.
"If the government tries to stop us from protesting by force, we'll be forced to go for tougher action including calling hartal after December 25," Nezami told the news agency over phone.
"If the government goes ahead endorsing the draft policy, we'll consider calling hartal between December 26 and December 30," Muhiuddin said.
