Italy urged to formalise BD workers\\\' recruitment process

FE Report | Friday, 20 February 2015

The government has proposed the visiting Italian deputy minister to take initiatives for formalising recruitment process of Bangladeshi workers.
The proposal came Thursday during a courtesy call of an Italian delegation led by the deputy foreign minister of Sen. Benedetto Della Vedova on Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment (EWOE) Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain at the city's Probashi Kallyan Bhaban.
"I proposed the Italian deputy minister to formalise the manpower recruitment process to protect workers' interest," Mr Hossain told journalists after the meeting.
He also said the visiting minister took the issue positively and an Italian official team will visit Bangladesh to discuss the issue.
Some 180,000 Bangladeshis are working in Italy. Most of them are recruited as the seasonal workers. But they are forced to spend a big amount of money to secure job in the European country.
As Italy has a seasonal workers' demand so it can send the requirement proposal formally to Bangladesh and both the countries can sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in this connection, said Mr Hossain.
If it is necessary Bangladesh will provide required training to the job- seekers and send workers to Italy at a zero cost, the minister said.
There is no MoU between Italy and Bangladesh on manpower recruitment.
