IU eight offices being run by acting officials

IU CORRESPONDENT | Wednesday, 13 March 2024

ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY, Kushtia, Mar 12: Eight important departments in Islamic University (IU) are being run by acting officials.
In-charge means continuing the interim period without suspending the proceedings. But at IU, these positions are being managed by acting officers without appointing any permanent officers for years.
According to the IU registrar office, the registrar, the librarian, the controller of examinations, chief engineer, public relations, finance and accounts, planning and development, and physical education departments are all dependent on acting officials.
Registrar HM Ali Hasan is among those appointed as acting one. He took over as acting registrar on June 30, 2022.
Abul Kalam Azad was appointed acting controller of examinations on July 1, 2017. Mrs. Shahanaj Begun was appointed acting chief librarian about two months ago.
In addition, on June 30, 2022, Deputy Registrar Sheikh Amanur Rahman will become acting director of Information, Publication and Public Relations Office. Acting director of Finance and Accounts Department is Zakir Hossain.
Chief engineer of the engineering office KM Sharif Uddin has been appointed acting head of Engineering Office as of July 15.
On the same day, Mr Shah Alam was appointed acting director of the Physical Education Department.
Acting Registrar HM Ali Hasan said, 'There is no pressure due to being in charge. However, if the IU administration wants, they can make permanent appointments to the posts.
The administrative work in IU is proceeding at its own pace.
A teacher of the university, who did not want to be named, told the FE that it was necessary to make the departments permanent to give them freedom to run the university well.
The administration does not take initiative to solve this problem due to vested interests. In order to keep control of the administration, the offices are given to acting officials.
A correspondent wanted to know about the whole matter, Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Sheikh Abdus Salam told the FE that the vice-chancellor alone could not do everything. Skilled people are not available in some places.
"These posts are being filled at various universities. I agree with the question in principle, but I'm trying to fill in the blanks and can't. However, I am trying; I won't be able to do all of them, but I will try to appoint permanent administrators in some offices."
In response to the question on whether the officials in charge are hostages to the administration, he said that the pressure actually depends on the strength of mind of the persons in charge. No pressure is exerted on the officials from the university administration. But the stress is personal to them. Sometimes, the voice-like conversations of some people are seen in the news on social media and paper cutting.
When there is a movement against them, they may be under pressure. These pressures depend on the strength of mind, efficiency and integrity of the officer.
