Wednesday, 3 December 2014

The verdict on former Jatiya Party MP Abdul Jabbar in a war crimes case is expected any day. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1, led by Justice Enayetur Rahim, finished the trial proceedings in absentia on Wednesday and kept its verdict pending. The tribunal had declared Jabbar an absconder earlier and appointed Supreme Court lawyer Abul Hasan as his counsel. On May 11, the prosecution pressed charges against Jabbar. He is charged with five types of crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh’s independence struggles in 1971. Jabbar, son-in-law of a local Muslim League leader, was the founder of the ‘Peace Committee’ in Pirojpur’s Mathbarhia, the report said. Investigations into his alleged crimes started on May 19 last year. According to the investigators, the 80-year-old engineer is now in the US, according to bdnews24.com.
