Jakarta keen to buy drugs, explore jt ventures in textile, fertiliser sectors

Thursday, 26 July 2007

Indonesia is keen to buy pharmaceuticals from Bangladesh and likes to explore joint ventures in textile and fertiliser sectors, reports UNB.
Director General for Asia, Pacific and African Affairs of Indonesia Primo Alui Joelianto said this while talking to the press after a meeting with Foreign Affairs Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury in the city Wednesday.
Joelianto came to Dhaka to attend the first ever Joint Economic Commission (JEC) meeting between the two countries that concluded at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) Tuesday.
The JEC was formed in 2004, but no meeting was held in the last three years.
The JEC identified areas of trade and economic cooperation between Dhaka and Jakarta, Joelianto said.
He said Indonesia is keen to buy some pharmaceutical products, especially raw materials, in response to Bangladesh's offer.
He added: "We've agreed upon some commitments for cooperation… Since Indonesia also produces pharmaceuticals, we like to explore joint ventures in textile and fertiliser sectors."
The next JEC meeting will be held next year in Jakarta, Joelianto said.
The volume of the Dhaka-Jakarta bilateral trade remains at a very nominal stage. In 2005-06, the two-way trade was only about Tk 5.09 billion (Tk 509 crore).
The foreign adviser further said: "We're making efforts to strengthen our political, economic and cultural ties with Indonesia, the largest Muslim country with 2.30 billion people."
He said the Bangladeshi pharmaceuticals and `halal' meat have a great demand in Indonesia and they have shown interest in importing those products.
Besides, the adviser said, the discussion also focused on easing the visa regime to establish more people-to-people contacts between the two countries.
