Jamaat calls 24-hr hartal for Thursday

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir have called a nationwide general strike for Thursday (Nov 6) in protest against its top leader Mir Quasem Ali’s death sentence for wartime offences. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2, headed by Justice Obaidul Hassan, sentenced Jamaat’s central executive committee member Mir Quasem to hang till death on Sunday, nearly six months after the war crimes case was wrapped up. The party said in a statement that the 24-hour hartal would start from 6:00am on Thursday. Jamaat had called nationwide hartals for Thursday (Oct 30), Sunday (Nov 2) and Monday (Nov 3) in protest of its Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami’s capital punishment given by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Wednesday (Oct 29), according to private TV channels.
