Jamaat-e-Islami has called for hartals (shutdowns) spread into three dyas (Thursday, Sunday and Monday) to protest the death sentence awarded to its Ameer Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami by the war crimes tribunal. The party, in a statement on Wednesday afternoon, announced nationwide general strikes from 6am Thursday to 6am Friday and 6am Sunday to 6am Tuesday. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Wednesday sentenced Nizami, 71, to hang until death, nearly one year after the war crimes case was wrapped up. In the 204-page judgment, the three-member ICT-1 panel of judges observed that Nizami committed crimes against humanity during Bangladesh’s independence struggles in 1971, according to private TV channels.
