Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called a 2-day nationwide nonstop hartal (shutdown) starting from Wednesday morning. The Jamaat-e-Islami’s acting Ameer Maqbul Ahmed announced the shutdown programme in a statement on Tuesday afternoon. The announcement came immediately after the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami's Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam to death for his crimes against humanity during Bangladesh’s independence struggles in 1971. The Jamaat acting chief said that the 48-hour general strike will start at 6:00am on Wednesday and will end at 6:00am on Friday, according to a news agency.
