Jamaat directs activists to join relief works immediately

Monday, 6 August 2007

Responding to the appeal of the Chief Adviser to the caretaker government and the Army Chief, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh has directed all its activists to join relief operation immediately to save the flood-affected people.
In a joint statement Sunday, party Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami and Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid expressed grave concern over the loss of lives and property across the country due to flood, reports UNB.
They stated most people in 47 districts have been affected by the flood that marooned thousands of people and damaged huge standing crops.
At this stage, it is not possible for the government alone to tackle the situation, they observed.
"In this situation, all should stand beside the flood-affected people responding to the appeal of the Chief Adviser and the Army Chief," mentioned the Jamaat leaders and former ministers of the immediate-past BNP-led coalition government, a day after the clarion call came from the two chiefs.
The leaders called upon all to save people's lives first in such a dire state of natural calamity, as "there should not be any politics" when people are afloat on the floodwaters.
"As the goal of politics is public service, all should come forward unconditionally and with full capacity to serve the flood-stricken people," stated the Jamaat leadership.
They also called upon the party activists of all levels and the countrymen, including solvent people, donors and service-oriented organisations, to stand beside the distressed humanity.
Matiur Rahman Nizami and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid gave four-point instructions to their party rank and file for conducting the relief operation, including one to shun fronting party banner.
Activists have been asked to come forward to help the flood-affected people as per their ability by contacting local administrations.
"But no party banner could be used during the relief operation," the party said in strict compliance with the interim regime's desire.
The activists have to save the marooned people and give them shelter. They have to give priority to old men, women, mentally impaired people and children.
Daily necessaries, including dry foods, will have to be distributed among them. Medical teams should be formed to give treatment to the sick people.
The Islamic party leaders prayed for salvation of the departed souls and also conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved families of around a hundred people reported killed in flood-related incidents.
