Jamaat-e-Islami for holding general election as per roadmap

Saturday, 5 January 2008

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Motiur Rahman Nizami Friday urged the government to hold the general election in the country as per the declared roadmap, reports UNB.
"We hope a free, fair, credible and acceptable election will be held in the country on schedule," he said while speaking at the inaugural session of the party's Majlish-e-Shura meet in the morning.
Nizami also urged the government to remove all suspicions and doubts about holding the election, as there is widespread misgivings among the people whether the country's election would be held or not.
He said the last election could not be held due to the "controversial role" of the Election Commission (EC) and discrepancies in the voters' list. "The EC should be kept above all controversy so that there is no obstacle to holding a free, fair election," he added.
Terming 2007 the most eventful year in the history of Bangladesh, the Jamaat chief said the state of emergency was declared in the country due to an unavoidable situation. "Everybody should look into the context of emergency and seek self-purification," he said.
Nizami, a former minister in the previous BNP-led alliance government, said the present caretaker government was re-constituted on January 11 last year with the support of army aiming at presenting an acceptable election in the country. "The main mandate for this government is to offer an acceptable election," he observed.
Referring to the 1/11, the Jamaat chief said the repetition of the situation that prevailed before was undesirable. He called for the practice of politics based on "understanding and tolerance for greater national interests."
About the present price-hike of essentials, particularly of food grains, he said there is "panic" amid a stagnant economic situation prevailing in the country and an abnormal price-hike of daily necessities like rice is seen everyday. "All should take responsiblity to reduce the people's sufferings," he said.
"It is for the government to remove the panic," he said and called for boosting food production and importing food to mitigate the crisis.
The former agriculture minister urged the government to import sufficient quantity of rice on emergency basis to tackle the present crisis and facilitate timely supply of all agricultural inputs including fertiliser among the farmers for a hefty Boro production.
He proposed the authorities concerned to introduce food for work programme to accelerate the rehabilitation work in the country's 'Sidr'-affected areas.
