RANGPUR, Sept 19 (BSS): Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar has said his party, together with the people, has taken to the streets to support and strengthen the interim government.
"After the fall of the previous regime, we have been responding to the call of the chief adviser and supporting to this interim government. That is why we have taken to the streets," he said.
Mia Golam Parwar, a former Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker, made the remarks while addressing a protest rally at the Public Library ground in the Town Hall square of Rangpur city on Friday.
The protest was jointly organised by the Rangpur Metropolitan and District units of the party, with Rangpur Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer ATM Azam Khan presiding over the event.
Assistant Director of the party's Rangpur-Dinajpur region, Maulana Momtaz Uddin, and Central Working Committee member Professor Mahbubur Rahman Belal spoke as special guests.
The Jamaat Secretary General emphasised the importance of the Proportional Representation (PR) system in elections.
He said surveys conducted by various government agencies and international organizations show widespread public support for the PR system. Out of the 31 parties in the unified commission, 25 parties favour the system.
"Elections should be held in a way that ensures fairness and representation. If needed, a referendum can be conducted to seek the opinion of the people on the PR system," he added.
He also called for the implementation of key reforms outlined in the July Charter with a legal basis before holding the parliamentary election.
Golam Parwar stressed that holding elections under the PR system, along with legal reforms, would help prevent the rise of authoritarianism in the future.
Following the rally, Jamaat-e-Islami held a large procession in Rangpur city, demanding five key points, including the legal basis of the July Charter and holding the parliamentary election under the PR system.
