A Jamaat man was injured in a 'shootout' between a group of Jamaat-e-Islami activists and police at Debhata in Satkhira district on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Nurul Amin, 45, an activist of Debhata upazila unit of Jamaat and son of Akbar Ali Gazi of Garanbaria village. Being tipped off that group of Jamaat-Shibir activists were gathering in Ghonatala village of Debhata upazila for carrying out subversive activities, a police team conducted a drive in the area around 2.00am, said Kamal Hossain, sub-inspector of Debhata Police Station. Sensing the presence of police, the Jamaat-Shibir men hurled bombs at them, prompting the law enforcers to take action, triggering a ‘shootout’. At one stage, Nurul Amin sustained bullet injuries during the 'gun battle'. Later police rescued him and rushed him to Satkhira Sadar Hospital while his associates fled the scene. Police recovered a sharp weapon and two iron rods from the spot. Nurul Amin was wanted in separate cases filed with Debhata Police Station, said police, according to UNB.
