SATKHIRA, Apr 29 (UNB): An activist of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in a 'gunfight' with police at Kewratala village in Debhata Upazila early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Sirajul Islam (45), a resident of Chiledanga village of the upazila.
Being tipped off that a group of Jamaat-Shibir men was holding a clandestine meeting in the area, a police team launched a drive in the area at about 5:00 am, said Jalaluddin, officer-in-charge of Debhata Police Station.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the Jamaat-Shibir activists hurled crude bombs on them prompting the police personnel to retaliate with firing that triggered a gunfight leaving Sirajul injured with bullets.
Severely injured, Sirajul was rushed to Sakhipur Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Two police constables Amirul and Saiyedul were also injured.
Police recovered two firearms from the spot.
Police sources said Sirajul had several cases filed against him, including for tree felling in the area and killing of Awami League leader Raihan.
