Jamaat man killed in Satkhira \\\'shootout\\\'

An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in a ‘shootout’ between his supporters and police at Debhata Upazila in Satkhira on Tuesday morning. The dead ia Sirajul Islam, 45, Kewratala unit Jamaat activist and a resident of Chiledanga village of the upazila. Being tipped off that a group of Jamaat-Shibir men was holding a clandestine meeting at Kewratala village, a team of police conducted a drive at the village around 5:00am, said Jalaluddin, officer-in-charge of Debhata Police Station. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the Jamaat-Shibir men hurled crude bombs on them and opened fire prompting the police personnel to retaliate with firing that triggered a gunfight. Sirajul received bullet injuries in line of fire. He was whisked to nearby Sakhipur Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Two police constables Amirul and Saiyedul were also injured. Police recovered two firearms from the spot, according to UNB.
