DU Correspondent | Thursday, 21 August 2008

Former general secretary of Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) Md Anwar Hossain Wednesday alleged that an intelligence agency and the BNP-Jamaat-backed teachers interfered into the Tuesday's dean election of the university.

"The university administration, the intelligent agency and the teachers belonged to the BNP and the Jamaat-e-Islami nakedly manipulated the dean election grabbing eight faculties out of ten under their possession", Hossain told journalists at a press conference at DU teachers' Club Wednesday.

When asked how the agency interfered into the DU dean election, Hossain also a defeated candidate for the August 19 dean election, said that the agency phoned him on August 18 and wanted to sit in a meeting with him immediately.

He, however, couldn't specify how the agency and the BNP-Jamaat-backed teachers manipulated the election. "The DU vice-chancellor, the pro-vice-chancellor, the treasurer and the proctor are associated with the Jamaat-e-Islami and they also contributed to manipulate the dean election", Hossain, former dean of Biological Sciences Faculty alleged.

He called upon the Awami-backed and progressive teachers not to participate in any future election of the university during the regime of this army-backed government.
