Jamaat, NDA backs hartal
Monday, 29 November 2010
Jamaat-e-Islami has decided to actively support tomorrow's (Tuesday) dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the main opposition BNP.
Jamaat Acting Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam made the declaration at a press conference in the city Sunday, a day after it held a meeting with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, reports bdnews24.com.
On Saturday, the party said they would convey the decision after discussing the matter in its party forum.
Mr Azhar at the press conference said that there was no alternative to a movement against the government.
BNP on November 22 called the countrywide hartal for November 30, demanding action to end miseries of the common people, save democracy and defend the country's interest.
The top Jamaat leader claimed that the law enforcers have arrested over 300 opposition leaders and activists ahead of the hartal.
Meanwhile, UNB adds: Leaders of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have extended their support to the hartal.
The decision was taken at an NDA meeting Saturday.
NDA Convener Liakat Ali, Secretary General of Jatiyo Gano Mukti Andolon Rezaul Karim and Secretary General of Janata Mukti party Dr Muktadirul Azam, among others, attended the meeting.
The leaders accused the government of failing to run the country properly and turning the Jatiyo Sangsad ineffective.
Common people and businessmen were now feeling insecure and frustrated due to corruption, terrorism and tender manipulation in the country, they added.
The NDA leaders called upon the people to observe the hartal spontaneously to press the demand for resignation of the 'inept' and 'undemocratic' government.
