Wednesday, 17 September 2014

The Jamaat-e-Islami has called a 2-phase Bangladesh-wide 48 hours hartal (general strike) for Thursday and Sunday to mount pressure on the government to release its top leader and war crimes convict Delawar Hossain Sayedee from jail. The 1st phase of the 2-day nationwide shutdown will start at 6:00am tomorrow (Thursday) and continue till 6:00am on Friday. It will resume at 6:00am on Sunday and end at 6:00am on Monday, said a statement by acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Mokbul Ahmad on Wednesday. The party also said it will hold prayers on Friday for its leader and agitation programmes on Saturday. The Supreme Court this (Wednesday) morning commuted Sayedee's death sentence handed down earlier by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 and jailed him unto death for his crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. Jamaat rejected the verdict and demanded immediate release of Sayedee, according to private TV channels.
