Jamaat\\\'s half-day hartal ends in Sylhet

Monday, 23 June 2014

The half-day hartal, enforced by the local unit of Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the arrest of one of its leaders, was observed in Sylhet district amid some stray incidents on Monday. Witnesses said Jamaat-Shibir activists brought out a procession in Pathantula Latif Manjil in the city area around 9am. When the procession came close to Madina Market, the Jamaat-Shibir men vandalised eight CNG run auto-rickshaws, two human haulers and blasted some crude bombs. Most shops remained closed in the city while almost all modes of vehicle except auto-rickshaws and rickshaws stayed off the streets. No long-route bus left Sylhet city during the 6am to 12noon shutdown. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Rahmatullah said additional police were deployed in the city to avert any untoward situation, according to UNB.
