Jamaat-e-Islami called a 24-hour nationwide hartal for Wednesday protesting the Appellate Division’s verdict on Tuesday that upheld the capital punishment of condemned war crimes convict Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid. Acting Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Makbul Ahmad announced the 24-hour shutdown programme for Wednesday on the party’s website in protest against the Appellate Division’s judgment. The 24-hour shutdown will start at 6:00am on Wednesday and end at 6:00am on Thursday. In 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 sentenced him to death and later the High Court upheld the tribunal’s verdict, A four-member bench of the Supreme Court (SC) Appellate Division, led by chief Justice SK Sinha, delivered the short order on Tuesday morning of the verdict in a crowded courtroom amid tight security, upholding the apex court’s earlier order, according to a news agency.
