Jamaat\\\'s lawyer Cadman calls for retrial of Sayedee
Tuesday, 23 September 2014
British lawyer Toby Cadman, defending the Jamaat-e-Islami's leaders being tried and also those convicted for war crimes during Bangladesh's independence struggles in 1971, has asked Bangladesh government to get a review of Saydee's conviction at 'an internationally appointed and independent tribunal'. Speaking at a media call in London after Monday midnight (Bangladesh standard time), Cadman urged the government to not execute Supreme Court's life-in-jail verdict on Jamaat Nayeb-e-Aameer Delwar Hossain Saydee's appeal. Cadman cited ‘concerns about due process and protection of fundamental fair trial rights’ in making Sayedee's case. He also reiterated ‘very serious concerns’ with the trial process. Sayedee’s third son Masood Sayedee, hours after the SC verdict on Sept 17, said they would appeal against the sentence although Attorney General Mahbubey Alam had initially said there was no scope for a review. On Monday in London, Jamaat counsel Cadman has called on the UNHCR to put pressure on Dhaka to ensure that Sayedee’s case ‘is properly reviewed’, according to bdnews24.com.
