James Blake tames Fish

Monday, 27 August 2007

NEW HAVEN, United States, Aug 26 (AFP): Third-seeded James Blake capped his remarkable New Haven run here Saturday with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over fellow-American Mardy Fish at the 675,000-dollar Pilot Pen tennis tournament.
To the delight of his army of vocal fans, the popular 27-year-old Blake claimed his second title of the season and tenth of his career.
In 2007, he was a runner-up finisher in Delray Beach, Los Angeles and the Cincinnati Masters Series.
This is the American's second triumph in three years here at the Connecticut Tennis Center where Blake, who lived in a neighboring town during his youth, has a rooting section of the stadium, the J-Block, named after him.
Blake was tested hard this week, saving three match points in the third-round against Argentine's Agustin Calleri. In Friday's semi-final, France's Paul-Henri Mathieu gave him all he could handle before succumbing in a third-set tie-breaker.
