FE Report
Jamuna Bank Furniture Festival 2009 began Sunday at 130 shops of the Rokeya Sarani at Mirpur in the city.
Jamuna Bank Managing Director Matiur Rahman inaugurated the festival jointly organised by Bangladesh Furniture Industry Owners Association (BFIOA) and Jamuna Bank.
BFIOA President Akhtaruzzaman said, "We have a furniture market worth Tk 50 billion (5000 crore), in which 2,500,000 people are directly and indirectly involved including 20,000 business people."
"We are organising this fair for the third time to boost up the market. During the 80s and up to 2002 we had a trend of importing furniture but nowadays the rate of import has been reduced," he said.
Jamuna Foundation Chairman Noor Mohammad expressed hope to build a 'city of furniture' at the Rokeya Sarani and assured BFIOA of providing assistance.
BFIOA General Secretary Bazlul Karim said, "We are expecting to sell furniture worth around Tk 50 million in the festival."
The festival will remain open from 9:00am to 8:00pm everyday until November 15.
