Jamuna erodes village protection dam at Kazipur upazila

SIRAJGANJ, Oct 10: Some 20 meter-long village protection embankment near Majbarihaat area of Majbari union under Kazipur upazila of the district has been damaged due to forceful tide of the mighty Jamuna River.
The authority concerned has started piling-up geo-bags to protect the dam. The inhabitants of the union are worried over the present condition of the protection dam.
According to the official sources at the Water Development Board (WDB) source a total Tk 180 million was allotted to construct the 500-metre long embankment in 2011. The damage has developed on the dam from Monday last, the sources added.
Farmer Kamal Hossain of the upazila said he is afraid that erosion may engulf his two-bigha T-Aman field. He urged the authority concerned to take immediate steps regarding this.
Local people claimed that the contractor who built the dam used low quality material.
Ataur Rahman, contractor of contracting enterprise, denied the allegation and said frequent flood hit the embankment. This is the only reason of the damage.
