Friday, 23 November 2007
Janata Bank limited has decided to allocate a total of Tk 2.55 billion (255 crore) in two credits under the government's plan for rehabilitating the cyclone-affected farmers.
The public bank has decided to sanction Tk 1.25 billion in agriculture or rural credit. It will also allocate Tk 1.30 billion for income-generating activities, reports UNB.
"Under this programme, the cyclone-affected farmers will enjoy new agricultural credits without any down payment for two years," said an announcement from the bank.
The decision to allocate the credits was taken in a board meeting of the bank Wednesday with its Chairman Suhel Ahmed Chowdhury in the chair. Directors and other high officials of the bank were also present in the meeting.
NGOs will invest the allocated Tk 2.55 billion. Of the amount, Tk 1.25 billion will be disbursed in the cyclone-affected unions under the agriculture-credit programme, and the rest Tk 1.30 billion will be disbursed for income-generating activities.
A complaint and loan-monitoring cell has begun monitoring, so that "any farmers do not face any harassment or delay in receiving the credits."
Janata head office and higher executives are monitoring the field-levels for ensuring the rural credit and agriculture credit disbursement programme.
Until November 15, the bank disbursed over Tk 1.01 billion in agriculture and rural credits, and in poverty alleviation and other sectors.
