Janaza for 41 slain army officers, DG's wife today

Namaz-e-janaza for 41 army officers, including BDR chief Major General Shakil Ahmed and his wife Nazneen Shakil, brutally killed inside the Bangladesh Rifles headquarters will be held at the National Parade Square at 10:00am today (Monday), said an official announcement, reports UNB.

Earlier, mass funerals for 33 of the officers killed in an unprecedented violence at the headquarters of the paramilitary border force were scheduled for Saturday morning but later postponed as more dead bodies were retrieved from mass graves at Peelkhana on the day.

The fresh funeral program was announced Sunday in an ISPR release that also carried the list of the 41 military martyrs.

Apart from DG of the BDR Maj General Shakil Ahmed and his wife Nazneen, the other slain army officers are Col M Zakir Hossain, Col M Moshiur Rahman, Col Kudrat Ilahi Rahman Shafiq, Col M Akhter Hossain, Col M Rezaul Kabir, Col Nafizuddin Ahmed, Col Kazi Emdadul Haq, Col Samsul Arefin Ahmed, Col M Nakibur Rahman, Col Kazi Moazzem Hossain, Col M Shawkat Imam, Col M Emdadul Islam, Col M Aftabul Islam, Lt Col Ershad Ibn Amin, Lt Col Shamsul Azam, Lt Col M Badrul Huda, Lt Col M Saiful Islam, Lt Col M Lutfar Rahman, Lt Col M Sajjadur Rahman, Lt Col Kazi Rabi Rahman, Lt Col Lutfar Rahman Khan, Maj M Mokbul Hossain, Maj M Abdus Salam Khan, Maj Hossain Sohel Shahnewaz, Maj Kazi Mosaddek Hossain, Maj M Saleh, Maj Mahmud Hassan, Maj Mustak Mahmud, Maj Mahmudul Hasan, Maj Humayun Haider, Maj M Azharul Islam, Maj M Humayun Kabir Sarkar, Maj M Khalid Hossain, Maj M Maksum-ul-Hakim, Maj Syed M Idris Iqbal, Maj M Rafiqul Islam, Maj M Mosharraf Hossain, Maj M Mominul Islam Sarkar, Maj Mostafa Asaduzzaman and Maj SM Mamunur Rahman.

The death toll in Wednesday-Thursday's revolt at the Peelkhana BDR headquarters stood at 71 after the recovery of body of another BDR officer from Kamrangirchar sewer tunnel Sunday.

Earlier on the day of trouble on Wednesday, five bodies were found shortly after the mutiny while 16 bodies of slain BDR officials and jawans and a minor girl were recovered from the Buriganga river and from inside the BDR headquarters the day after.

To the horror of all, 39 bodies, including that of the BDR chief, General Shakil, were dug out from a mass grave inside the headquarters and a sewerage tunnel Friday.

Ten more bodies of army officers, including Shakil's wife Nazneen, were retrieved from three mass graves found on the premises of the haunted BDR headquarters Saturday, while one was found Sunday as hectic search for the rest 71 reported missing continued.
