Friday, 1 April 2011

Commerce minister Faruk Khan has said the global price hike of powdered milk, triggered by Japan radiation, has hit the local market too, reports bdnews24.com "Despite a rise in powdered milk price, edible oil and sugar prices are coming down in the local market due to the replacement of the delivery order (DO) system," he told reporters at the Secretariat on Thursday. According to state-owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), the prices of different brands of powdered milk have increased by 4.21 per cent in a month. Asked why the powdered milk price was rising though it was not imported from Japan, Faruk said: "We didn't import powdered milk from Russia during the Chernobyl disaster. Even then its price had soared at that time." In the west coast of the United States, a moderate radiation was found in cow milk following the nuclear perplexity in Japan. Faruk said the government's priority was to import radiation-free food. Regarding the price hike of essentials, the minister said, "Edible oil and sugar prices have already started showing a downtrend and those will come down further." According to the TCB, unpacked soybean oil price saw a fall by 1.88 per cent, while that of palm oil by 4.66 per cent in one month.
