Japan to help build Digital Bangladesh: Naoto Kan

TOKYO, Nov 29: Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan has assured
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of his government's support to Bangladesh in its efforts for building a "Digital Bangladesh" and achieving the position of a middle income country by fulfilling "Vision 2021", report agencies.
The assurance came when the two Prime Ministers held talks at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Monday evening.
"Earlier, we had an excellent meeting where we identified new areas of cooperation, besides ways to expand and strengthen the existing ones. I am convinced Japan and her generous people will stand by our side in our quest for a "Digital Bangladesh," the Prime Minister said at the official banquet hosted by the Japanese PM that took place at the PMO after the summit talks.
The Prime Minister said they had an excellent meeting where they identified new areas of cooperation, besides ways to expand and strengthen the existing ones.
Hasina also said an Economic Partnership Agreement between Bangladesh and Japan now could help reap mutual benefits by exploiting much of the two countries' untapped potentials.
The two prime ministers expressed their strong expectation that the project would substantially contribute to the economic development and poverty alleviation of Bangladesh through improved connectivity between its capital and its east and southwest regions.
The two prime ministers recognized the importance of building infrastructure for social and human resources development as well as sustainable economic growth and the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reiterated her sincere appreciation for Japan's support to core infrastructure development, such as large-scale bridges, roads, railways, power plants and electricity distribution facilities as well as Japan's assistance in the areas of education and health.
In the joint statement, Bangladesh and Japan also reaffirmed that peace and stability in the South Asia are vital for attaining prosperity across Asia and the world.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan commended the initiatives pioneered by Bangladesh at the launch of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and expressed his commitment to support the grouping for promoting regional cooperation.
