Japan to provide assistance to capital, port cities

The Japan government will provide grant worth some US$12.46 million to Bangladesh for solid waste management in Dhaka and Chittagong metropolises.
The governments of both the countries signed an agreement to this effect in Dhaka on Wednesday. Economic Relations Division (ERD) additional secretary Mohammed Abu Taher signed the exchange of note with Charges d' Affairs of Japan to Bangladesh Takeshi Matsunaga.
The additional secretary also signed the grant agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Chief Representative Mikio Hataeda.
Under the Improvement of Solid Waste Management Equipment of Bangladesh Government project, the Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chittagong city corporations will procure waste management equipment.
The city corporations will import 150 compactors, container carriers and dump trucks to dispose solid wastages of the metropolises in an environment-friendly way.
The Japanese grant for the project will also help conduct detail design and technical guidance for solid waste management in the city corporations.
Following the signing ceremony the Japanese Charges d' Affairs said after procuring the proposed waste disposal vehicles, those will carry some 2,000 tonnes of solid wastages daily in the three city corporations.
"The project will help the city people to get more environment-friendly metropolises."
Japan is continuing its support to Bangladesh for its development, he added.
