CHITTAGONG, Nov 04: The Japanese Consultant firm may submit the feasibility study report of the much-discussed 'Deep Seaport' at Sonadia point in the Bay of Bengal this month.
According to the concerned sources, the Japanese Consultant firm has meanwhile conducted its study for around two and half month for the second phase of the ongoing feasibility study. In the first phase, they proposed Sonadia point to be the comparatively suitable one among eight deep marine points of the country. Moheshkhali channel, Potenga outer Bar, Kutubdia channel, Akram point and Hironpoint are also included into the stated eight points.
Japanese Consultant firm, under second phase of the study, is now conducting fact-finding study on the matters relating to communication system with the proposed deep seaport at Sonadia from Chittagong Port, and Mongla port, co-ordination on management and productive feasibility.
Once there had been loud demands for establishing a deep seaport. But following 111, while dynamism in Chittagong Port was on a rise, certain quarters were not interested enough to raise the demand for setting up the deep seaport involving huge expenditures.
However, estimated expenditures for the proposed deep seaport at Sonadia point has not yet been finalised.
Meanwhile, a 11 member Deep Seaport Monitoring Committee has been formed headed by a Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping.
According to the concerned monitoring team and standing committee, the task of preparing the feasibility study report on deep seaport is almost at a final stage which is likely to be submitted during the current month.
