Japan's Muneta misses medal

Monday, 31 August 2009

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Aug 30 (AFP): Japan's double world champion Yasuyuki Muneta missed out on a medal today at the judo world championships after suffering a third round loss to Mongolia's Gankhuyag Dorjpalam in their +100kg meeting.
Heavyweight Muneta had been a favourite along with Teddy Riner of France to land gold but instead went the way of another early disappointment, Russian first round loser Alexander Mikhaylin.
Having failed to reach the quarter-finals Muneta cannot, under new rules, now go through the repechages to bid for a bronze medal.
