Jashore municipality's roads turn dilapidated

Public sufferings mount

BENAPOLE, Aug 05: Nearly 300-km roads of Jashore municipal area have been dilapidated, causing immense sufferings for commuters.
Pothole have been created on these roads with the pitch rising and the soil coming out.
Due to the onset of the monsoon, the residents of the town are suffering much from the stagnancy of rainwater on the roads.
Local people have expressed their anger that the municipal authorities have not taken any initiative to repair the damaged roads.
Municipal Assistant Engineer Makhlesur Rahman said there are 300km of roads in Jashore municipality area. Most roads in the wards have been run-down.
Road ditches and pitches have gone up and created potholes. Due to the rain, water has accumulated into the potholes of the roads, disrupting traffic.
Professor Selina Akhter, principal of Jashore Government Women's College, said her house is in the lane next to the south gate of Govt Michael Madhusudan (MM College) College. This road was repaired 20 years ago. Due to lack of repair, the paved road has now become a dirt road.
She said that due to the lack of water drainage system, when it rains, water remains stagnant on the road, making it difficult to move. The mayor of the municipality has been urged to repair the road.
"The sufferings of commuters, especially students, know no bounds while going through this road." Hamidul Haque, assistant professor of Government Michael Madhusudan (MM College) College, said the road in front of MM College is dilapidated. Although it is an important road in the town, the municipal authorities turn a blind eye to the repair of the road.
Due to the potholes created on the road, accident often occurs when rickshaws, easybikes and motorcycles are moving through the waterlogged and run-down road.
Jashore municipal ward councillor Rajibul Alam said that most of the roads in Khadki area of his ward have become impassable.
Commuters cannot travel in East Barandipara Bau Bazar, Mathapara, Fultala, Lichutala, Nathpara and other surrounding areas through the Dhaka Road Battala connection road of ward number one of the municipality.
This road has become impassable due to non-renovation for a long time. About 80 per cent of 01-km road from Dhaka Road to Phultala Crossing is full with potholes.
Locals are claiming that no work has been done despite asking the local public representatives several times to repair the road.
A resident, Shah Alam, said that the road was repaired about 10 years ago.
The places where there were more holes were filled with clay and pitch by the municipal. Since then, this road has not been repaired.
Saidur Rahman Ripon, councillor of ward number-01, said seven roads in his ward have become impassable. Due to the lack of road repair, people are suffering while travelling on the road.
"Only two or three roads will be repaired this year."
Locals have almost stopped vehicles driving on this road due to the rise of ditches and pitches and the creation of many small and big potholes.
The road on the east side of Sheikh Hasina IT Park in the ward has become impassable due to the creation of potholes.
The road leading to Ansar camp from Taltala and Bejpara graveyard in ward no 07 has turned into a sorry state.
Meanwhile, the road in front of Pipepatti, PTI Para, Sudhir Babur Kathgola, Kasari Patti and the road in front of District Livestock Office are also in a bad condition.
Jashore Municipality Mayor Haider Gani Khan Palash and Panel Mayor Mokamsimul Bari Apu said a project is awaiting approval for the road repair. Repair work will start after the approval.
