'Jatka' Preservation Week begins

Sunday, 29 March 2009

The country is observing 'Jatka Preservation Week-2009' from Saturday with a target of producing 0.3 million (3 lakh) tonnes of hilsha fish this year, reports BSS.
A colourful rally was bought out from Muktangan to the Matsha Bhaban in the city marking the inauguration of the Jatka Preservation Week from March 29 to April 4.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister M Abdul Latif Biswas led the rally while Fisheries and Livestock Secretary M Shah Alam, Fisheries Department Director General M Rafiqul Islam, other senior officials and NGO representatives took part, among others.
The participants carried banners, festoons and placards inscribed with various slogans on preservation of 'jatka' (hilsha fry).
In a brief address at the end of the rally, the fisheries and livestock minister said protection of 'jatka' is essential to bring about positive changes in the life of the fishermen.
Preservation of 'jatka' had contributed to the increase in production of hilsha last year, he said.
Later, the minister addressed a press conference at the Fisheries Department and sought cooperation of all, including the fishermen and NGOs to protect jatka and increase the production of hilsha.
Abdul Latif Biswas said the employment of about 2.0 million people, including 0.5 million fishermen, are involved directly or indirectly with hilsha fish in the country.
He highlighted the reason for the fall in hilsha production and government steps to reverse it.
