JBCCI welcomes BD-Japan EPA
Wednesday, 24 December 2025
The Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JBCCI) has welcomed the announcement that the governments of Bangladesh and Japan reached an agreement, in principle, on the Bangladesh-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).
This pivotal development marks a significant milestone toward the finalisation of a comprehensive economic partnership between the two nations, the Chamber said in a press statement.
As the process now enters its legal and ratification phase, JBCCI reaffirmed its commitment to supporting implementation, capacity building, and outreach so that the benefits of this landmark agreement are maximised for both nations.
The EPA is designed to deepen trade, investment, and service linkages between Bangladesh and Japan. With Bangladesh set to graduate from Least Developed Country (LDC) status in 2026, this agreement is expected to play a crucial role in facilitating the country's economic transition. The current agreement outlines the structure and key provisions of the EPA, with formal signing scheduled to take place once legal and cabinet-level processes are completed in both countries.
JBCCI has actively supported this process by commissioning a landmark policy study titled "Accelerating Japan-Bangladesh EPA: Key Priorities and Strategies Ahead."
The study, along with a perception survey conducted among JBCCI and Shoo Koo Kai (JCIAD) members, reflects the views of businesses engaged in bilateral trade and investment. JBCCI also engaged with both public and private stakeholders to provide research-based recommendations and practical insights for the negotiation process.
