DUCSU ELECTION

JCD accuses Shibir of violating code

DU CORRESPONDENT | Monday, 1 September 2025

The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) panel in the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election has accused the Shibir-backed alliance of violating the electoral code of conduct.
Abidul Islam Khan, Vice-President (VP) candidate of the BNP's student wing panel, raised the allegation in front of the Election Commissioner's office at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on Sunday.
Abidul claimed that on Saturday, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir arranged a freshers' reception for first-year students at Focus Coaching, operated under their supervision. During the event, the VP and general secretary (GS) candidates of the Shibir-backed panel delivered speeches and sought votes from students.
According to Clause 9(b) of the electoral code of conduct, no food can be served to voters during campaign activities, and Clause 9(c) prohibits giving gifts or tips to voters. "But members of the Shibir-backed panel broke these rules, and tried to influence the students," Abidul said.
"This is the third time we are submitting complaints about such irregularities. They (Jamaat-Shibir) are destroying the level-playing field by changing names and continuing their activities."
"Moreover, the university declared a four-day holiday for the election. But, with Friday and Saturday, it has turned into a six-day closure. This is discouraging non-residential students from coming to vote," he added.
