The Rajshahi University (RU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) have been enforcing an indefinite strike on the campus since Monday morning, demanding the release of their arrested leaders and activists. JCD RU unit vice president Asaduzzaman Anil announced the strike programme at a meeting on the campus around 11:45pm on Sunday. Police on Sunday night arrested 16 JCD activists along with a BNP leader from a ‘clandestine’ meeting at a local school. The arrestees include RU unit JCD president Imtiaz Ahmed, general secretary Quamrul Hasan, joint general secretary Sultan Ahmed Rahi and Rajshahi City Corporation’s Ward No 30 BNP president Nazmul Haque. Officer-in-charge of Matihar Police Station said they arrested the JCD men and the BNP leader around 9:30pm while they were holding a clandestine meeting at Mirzapur School and College to ‘plan subversive acts’, according to a news agency.
