The central body of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has served a show-cause notice on Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim, convener of Kabi Jasimuddin Hall unit at Dhaka University (DU, on charges of violating organisational discipline.
The notice was issued on Friday night through a press release signed by the organisation's Office Secretary, Md. Jahangir Alam.
According to the notice, Hamim has been asked to appear at the JCD central office within 24 hours and submit a written explanation in the presence of the organisation's President and General Secretary. It stated that permanent disciplinary action may be taken against him unless he can justify why such measures should not be imposed. The notice alleged that he violated organisational discipline while holding a responsible position under the DU unit of the organisation.
In a video message posted around 1:00 am on Saturday, Hamim initially said he would not submit a written reply. He claimed he had not committed any serious wrongdoing that warranted a show-cause notice being circulated publicly on social media instead of being communicated personally.
"They asked for a written reply. I could have given one if requested. But I will not submit a written reply. I have not committed any major offense that such a notice should be issued publicly on social media. People from across the country are now calling me, asking what wrongdoing I have committed," he said.
Hamim further stated that he was not initially informed of the reason behind the notice. Later, he learned that the show-cause was allegedly linked to an iftar gathering he organised on Thursda , involving DU students. The programme included a Qur'an recitation competition followed by an iftar event.
"If organising an iftar for students is considered an offense, and if leaders and activists of JCD at all levels believe I have done wrong, then I accept the allegation and seek forgiveness," he added.
