PATUAKHALI, July 20 (UNB): A court sent on Monday six people, including Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) president Rajib Ahsan, to jail, hours after their arrest in a case filed on charge of possessing drugs.
Patuakhali Senior Chief Judicial Magistrate SM Tarek Shams passed the order when police produced them before the court in the afternoon.
The court also fixed today (Tuesday) for hearing the bail petition submitted by their lawyers.
Earlier, detectives arrested JCD president Rajib Ahsan and five others reportedly along with 45 Yaba tablets in a car at Lebukhali Ferryghat in Dumki upazila on Sunday night.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Dumki thana Azam Khan filed a case against them under the Narcotics Control Act on Sunday night.
Rajib is accused in several other cases filed over subversive acts, the OC added.
bdnews24.com adds: The BNP's student wing, the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), has announced a two-day agitation in protest against the arrest of its President, Rajib Ahsan, reports bdnews24.com.
The student front has termed the arrest a 'conspiracy'.
It has planned agitations in district headquarters, metropolitan areas and universities today (Tuesday), JCD Vice-President Nazmul Hasan said at a press briefing in Dhaka on Monday.
He said they will stage demonstrations in various educational institutions in upazila and municipality areas on Wednesday.
JCD chief and five others were arrested from Lebukhali Pier at Dumki around 11:00 pm on Sunday night, allegedly with 45 Yaba pills and a bottle of hard liquor.
Nazmul Hasan told the media on Monday: "The government staged the drama of arresting a popular student front president with narcotics only to cover up the nefarious activities of Chhatra League across the country."
Bangladesh Chhatra League is the student wing of the ruling Awami League.
He said Ahsan was returning to Dhaka from his village home in Barisal after offering prayers at his father's grave and visiting relatives.
He said the arrest was planned to undermine the 'shooting popularity' of the party.
"Rajib Ahsan has been arrested at a time when we are at the final stage of reorganising different wings of the Chhatra Dal. We condemn the arrest."
He said the JCD chief's arrest followed the detention of its Jahangirnagar University unit President Jakir Hossain with a crude bomb a couple of days ago.
"The incidents were planned to tarnish the image of the leadership," he alleged.
