Jessore municipality to raise holding tax

JESSORE, Jun 15: Maruful Islam, Mayor, Jessore Municipality has decided to increase holding taxes within the municipality soon. But he said the taxation would not impose burden on the dwellers.
The mayor disclosed the information at a press conference held at Jessore Press Club Sunday morning.
The mayor, in the press conference, said there are a total of 19,036 old holdings within the municipality of whom only 37 per cent paid their taxes till date. He asked the rest to pay their taxes by the end of June.
'Reassessments for taxation were going on within the municipality. It is done in every five years according to the rule, he added, 'The dwellers who extended their establishments only will be taken under new taxation.'
Jessore is the oldest municipality in the country. It was established in 1864 while Kolkata Municipality was established in 1829. "We need to develop the living standard of the people," the mayor added.
