Jessore vegetable growers deprived of fair price

JESSORE, Dec 1: Farmers of Jessore are not getting adequate price of winter vegetables. They cultivated varieties of vegetables such as bottle gourd, cauliflower, radish, brinjal, country bean, cabbage, green chilli etc.
Winter vegetables have been cultivated in 19.50 hectare of land this year while the production target is being achieved rapidly according to the sources at Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), district.
Even after bumper production, prices of vegetables are still high. But the farmers are not getting the benefit of it. Middlemen are getting the benefit extracting higher prices from the consumers.
The bottle gourd is being sold between Tk 10 and 25 per piece while a kilogram of cauliflower is being sold at Tk 15 to Tk 20, brinjal at Tk 20 to Tk 25, country bean at Tk 25, cabbage at Tk 20 per piece, green chilly at Tk 40to Tk 45, per kg in Jessore market. Onion is being sold at Tk 40 per kg and potato at Tk 24.
Md Abdul Maleq , a farmer of Jessore Sadar Upazila said , "I cultivated brinjal in two acres of land but I did not get the expected price of the product. I sold per maund of brinjal at Tk 400 only but it is being sold Tk 800 at retail level."
Farmers urged the government to take steps for rational marketing in this district to ensure fair price of their products.
