BRAHMANBARIA, Oct 18: Jewellery shop owners in the district have been carrying on their business without valid licence for a long time, sources said.
According to market sources, there are about 17000 jewellers in the district and most of them have no valid licence to conduct their business.
Again, the jewellers who possess valid licence are also evading value added tax (VAT) as their business is not enlisted with the local customs department.
According to another source, the goldsmiths here mix an excess quantity of alloy with gold for making gold ornaments.
As a result, the customers are cheated while buying such low-quality ornaments.
The goldsmiths are also selling ornaments in different parts of the district mixing forty per cent of copper with gold.
In the situation, local people have sought immediate government intervention in this connection.
