The subject of this year's essay is: Reconstruction of Japan: Prescription to Transcend a Downsized Japan.
Japan has shown remarkable resilience twice in its modern history by adapting to the drastic changes in the international environment following the Meiji Restoration and the Second World War. The country has built up a firm and solid position as one of the world's leading economic powers. In recent years, however, Japan, once again, is faced with various cataclysmic changes such as the rise of newly industrializing economies headed by China, economic stagnation in advanced countries, and increasingly severe global environmental problems. Combined with the shrinking population, mounting government debts as well as politics in disarray, there is now widespread pessimism and a sense of social stagnation regarding the future of Japan.
Has Japan really lost its resilience and strengths? Can the nation, once again, demonstrate its capacity to skillfully adapt to such changes? Present your thoughts and ideas, looking ahead to the future of the Japanese economy, regarding what Japan should meet the challenges of the world with, what the future Japan should look like and the prerequisites for the revival and reconstruction of Japan.
