Jhenidah-Harinakundu road in dilapidated condition

JHENIDAH, Sept 10: Jhenidah-Harinakundu Zila road has been in dire straits for long causing immense suffering to the pedestrians and all kinds of commuters on the route.
Roads and Highways Department (RHD) sources said the total length of the road is 21 kilometre and 20 metre. The main road is 20 kilometre long while Jhenidah circuit house connecting road 1 kilometre and 250 metre.
Sources said carpeting was done from 12th km to 20th km of the road under Periodical Maintenance Programme (PMP) in FY 2009-10.
At present, some places of the 0-12th km of the road are in very much battered condition as carpeting and seal coat with macadam have suffered extensive damage.
While visiting the road recently this correspondent spotted thousands of potholes in the dilapidated road that is causing huge sufferings to the people.
The road has become unfit for traffic movement. Bazlur Rahman, a bus driver said, vehicular movement on the road remained suspended for some days during the rainy season this year.
Drivers are to drive vehicles amid risks of accidents, said supervisor of a bus Mohsin Ali.
Primary school teacher Abdus Sabur of Bhalki village told this correspondent that a few days ago nearly 30 vehicles remained stranded at Charatola area on the road as an iron-rod loaded vehicle got struck there for two days.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Harinakundu Mohammad Ashraful Amin told The Financial Express, "Jhenidah-Harinakundu Zila road, the majority portion of which belongs to Harinakundu upazila, is the main route for thousands of peasants of the agriculture-based locality. Farmers often complain to me against the dilapidated condition of the road that takes them more time than usual, and cause damages to their yields while they are carried to various markets and bazaars in and out of the upazila."
"Besides, many government officers and employees working in the upazila repeatedly told me their unpleasant experiences of jerking while going to the district headquarter through the road on which numerous potholes have developed," the UNO added.
Contacted, Md. Rafiqul Islam, Executive Engineer, RHD, Jhenidah road division told the FE, "A three-year term Development Project Proposal (DPP) of Tk 375 million has been sent to the Road Transport and Bridge Ministry for further actions."
