Jitu on five-day remand over Ashulia teacher’s killing

A court on Thursday placed Ashraful Islam Jitu, the alleged killer of Ashulia teacher Utpal Kumar Sarcar, on a five-day police remand in a case filed over the gruesome murder.
On Wednesday, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) nabbed Jitu, 19, reportedly the kingpin of a juvenile gang, for allegedly murdering Sarcar, a teacher of Hazi Yunus Ali School and College at Ashulia in the outskirts of the capital, from Sripur area of Gazipur district.
RAB handed Jitu over to Ashulia police who produced him before the court of the Senior Judicial Magistrate, Dhaka, seeking 10 days' remand.
Senior Judicial Magistrate of Dhaka Rajib Hasan granted five days' remand for Jitu, also a student of Class X of the same school at Ashulia.
According to the case statement, Jitu brutally beat Utpal Kumar Sarcar with a cricket stump and the grievously wounded teacher succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
On Thursday, Director (Media and Legal wing) of RAB Commander Khandaker Al Moin said at a press briefing at the elite force's Karwan Bazar office in the capital that they arrested Jitu from his Sripur hideout on Wednesday.
He said that apart from teaching, Utpal Sarcar was also in-charge for ensuring discipline on Hazi Yunus school and college campus.
