JL leader held for 'firing on protesters' during uprising in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, Nov 23: Police have arrested a Jubo League (JL) leader on charge of opening fire on protesters during the July-August anti-discrimination student-mass movement in Chattogram.
Identified as Touhidul Islam, the Jubo League leader was arrested in a police operation in Kamalnagar area of Satkhira Sadar upazila on Friday night for allegedly firing 28 rounds of bullet on students during the anti-discrimination movement in Chattogram on August 4.
Deputy Commissioner (crime and operations) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Mohammad Rois Uddin confirmed the arrest of Touhidul Islam at a press briefing at CMP media centre on Saturday.
Touhidul alias Hari Touhid alias Farid was previously seen brandishing weapons and firing during the anti-discrimination protests in Chandgaon and Bahaddarhat areas of the port city.
Rois Uddin said, "Touhidul is a professional criminal and mugger with cases of murder, use of weapons and extortion."
Police said that Touhidul admitted that he had fired on protesters on August 4 last in Chandgaon, using a 'Pakistani shooter gun'.
CMP operations to recover illegal weapons and ammunition are ongoing.
Police said that Touhidul was accused in 12 cases filed with various police stations under the CMP.
