JnU expels BCL leader for assaulting teacher

SM Sirajul Islam, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL)’s Jagannath University (JnU) unit, has been temporarily expelled from the institute for assaulting a teacher.
The university’s disciplinary committee took the decision at an emergency meeting on Saturday, according to a news agency.
A statement from JnU said Islam, a student of the Economics Department and another student of Islamic Studies Shamim Ahmed had been temporarily expelled for threatening Chemistry Department Chairman Mohammad Syed Alam over a tender on Mar 13.
The authorities also decided to serve a show-cause notice on former statistics department student Shyaman Molla as to why his certificate should not be revoked. A police complaint will be lodged soon over the incident, the statement said.
The university had invited a Tk 500,000 tender in October 2013 to procure furniture for a common room.
The chemistry teacher complained to JnU Teachers’ Association that BCL leader Islam, its JnU unit Organising Secretary Ahmed and activist Molla held him hostage at gunpoint  Thursday and demanded the tender papers.
